The Garden Club meets once a month on the Fourth Saturday at 11am to discuss different gardening techniques, ideas, and programs on different topics.
Teaching Garden Blog
June 8, 2024: members of the Lakehills Area Library Garden Club and friends gave up their Saturday morning cartoons to get up early and begin work on preparing the site in front of the two small storage buildings for the teaching garden. There were tools and snacks to share, a good plan, and plenty of willing attitude to get started. The first task of the day was to mark the edges and start chopping out the grass and weeds. Because Susie Collins had been at the site the previous weeks treating the area with her weed-killing solution of 30 percent vinegar, Dawn dish washing liquid, and Epsom salts, most of the weeds and grass were dead and easier to remove. The group worked from 7 AM until around 9:30 AM, when the sun really started to heat things up.
June 19, 2024: Five Garden Club members braved the elements and arrived at 7 AM to finish removing grass and weeds from the teaching garden site. Mission accomplished! Next steps for another workday are to lay bricks to outline the usable area as well as continue research on procuring a 500-600 gallon rainwater storage tank. Deb Reile made a beautiful and informative sign for the site.
July 22, 2024: On this workday, Garden Club members and friend Waylon pulled more grass and weeds, leveled the space, and placed weed block over the area with pins.
July 24, 2024: This was a short workday to position the outline bricks and check the area
again. We’re getting ready for gravel at a future time. Next steps are to finish the outline bricks, then pour gravel.
August 17, 2024: Garden Club members and friends placed bricks along the edges of the garden
area. Thank you to our anonymous donor for purchasing the bricks for the garden!
September 13, 2024: Buckhorn Soil and Stone delivered 9 yards of decomposed granite to the Teaching Garden area.
September 14, 2024: Members and friends of the Garden Club met at 7:30 AM to beat the heat and spread out the decomposed granite. It’s amazing how fast 8 helpers can get the job done!
September 21: Plant Donation Event outside at the Teaching Garden site. Thanks to TrueValue
and Garden Club members and friends for donating plants and funds to keep this project blooming and moving forward!
